The FOrth Orientation Course serves as a structured introductory gateway to understanding The British Orthodontic Fellowship Program, its different stages, academic and clinical expectations, and the pathway trainees follow from entry into the programme through to progression within it.
This course is designed to help dentists build a clear picture of the Fellowship in Orthodontics (FOrth) journey, including the training structure, learning approach, progression stages, and the academic and professional development expected throughout the programme.
It is not intended to provide only general information. It is designed to clarify the full vision of the programme so that trainees begin their journey with greater understanding, stronger readiness, and clearer awareness of the commitment and growth required within this specialist pathway.
What You Will Learn
The FOrth Orientation Course helps trainees understand the full structure of the British orthodontic fellowship pathway and how the educational journey within the programme is designed. It gives participants a clearer view of how to start correctly and how to gain the greatest value from each stage of training.
This course focuses on clarifying the path, explaining the components of the programme, and helping trainees understand how theoretical study, practical training, case-based discussions, and examination preparation all fit into one integrated specialist journey.
During this course, you will learn how to:
- Understand the overall structure of the Fellowship in Orthodontics (FOrth) programme and its main stages
- Recognise the educational philosophy behind the programme and how academic and clinical development are built over time
- Understand the role of each stage of training, from theoretical foundation to higher academic and clinical progression
- Become familiar with the different courses within the programme and how they complement one another
- Understand what is expected from trainees academically, practically, and professionally throughout the journey
- See how skills in orthodontic diagnosis, treatment planning, and case discussion develop across the programme stages
- Understand the relationship between structured study, practical exposure, and preparation for specialist examinations
- Gain a general understanding of Part A and Part B requirements and where they fit within the training pathway
- Appreciate the importance of documentation, case discussion, and academic discipline in shaping a more mature orthodontic clinician
- Build a clearer picture of the learning environment, scientific interaction, and the level of seriousness required in the programme
- Understand how the programme can support long-term professional development within orthodontics
- Begin the journey with greater clarity and readiness rather than entering the programme with incomplete understanding
This course helps trainees see the programme as an integrated system rather than a collection of separate subjects, allowing them to understand early on where they begin, why they are learning, and where the pathway may take them.
Course Objectives
The FOrth Orientation Course is designed to introduce trainees to the structure of the British orthodontic fellowship programme, clarify the nature of the learning journey within it, and help them build an organised understanding that allows them to begin with greater readiness and confidence.
The main objectives of this course are to:
- Provide a clear and comprehensive overview of the FOrth programme and its different stages
- Introduce trainees to the academic and clinical nature of the overall training pathway
- Explain how the various courses and stages work together in building a specialist orthodontic clinician
- Help trainees understand what will be expected from them throughout the programme
- Build a clearer picture of the learning requirements, commitment, and professional development involved in the fellowship pathway
- Clarify the role of theoretical study, practical training, and case-based discussion in specialist development
- Explain the place of Part A and Part B within the wider structure of the programme
- Reduce uncertainty at the beginning of the training journey and help trainees enter with greater confidence
- Prepare participants academically and mentally for a long-term pathway that requires seriousness and continuity
- Support a more organised and informed start that allows trainees to benefit more fully from later stages
- Help dentists move from general interest in orthodontics to a clearer understanding of the specialist pathway itself
This course represents the intellectual starting point of the programme, because it gives trainees a clearer foundation and an earlier understanding of the road they are about to enter.
